I haven't always been a big fan of Valentine's Day. It seems to be a high pressure holiday, especially for the guy, to create a Hollywood perfect date night. But as I get older, I've come to enjoy the holiday a lot more. Here's how I go about having an awesome Valentine's Day:
Don't expect Hollywood. Pretty simple rule. Plus, if you actually stop and think about all the stuff your mate does for you, you may be surprised to realize that some of the most romantic things aren't necessarily some of the most extravagant.
Don't go overboard in the gift department. It's best not to over think Valentine's gifts, especially if you're a woman giving to a man which I understand can be daunting. (Seriously, why is it so hard to shop for a man?) A result of over thinking may result in a lot of items that are cute, but not necessarily super special. Instead of opting for the six foot teddy bear that ultimately will end up being a gift for your niece's birthday, try getting him something he really wants, even if it's not pink with hearts on it. Or do something homemade, like writing down all the ways he's super amazing. Sometimes, just letting your guy know that you appreciate him is enough of a gift.
Do let love shine through you. It's kinda cheesy, I know, but whether you're single, dating or married, you can do this. Valentine's isn't just about couples. It's about sharing love with everyone you see. Invite a co-worker for lunch, tip the floral delivery man extra, let that car on the highway cut in front of you....Little things work!
Let someone know how much you love them. Again, single or not you can do this. Try writing a letter or making a short video telling someone how much you love them. After all, that's the whole point of Valentine's Day!
Embrace the Cheese! There's a lot of cheese on this holiday. People get mushy, post tons of pictures of their loved ones on Facebook, tweet about their romantic plans....embrace it :) It's fun and only one day of the year!
Happy Valentine's Day!
